To execute some menu commands in the Extras menu and the Tools menu, AppleScript is required. And many of included scripts require the standard scripting additions.
In System 7 and 7.1, AppleScript and the scripting additions are not included originally so that you may have to get and install them.
In System 7.5 and later, AppleScript and the scripting additions are installed by the standard installation.
Scriptable Finder
To run some of included scripts, the Finder has to be scriptable.
In System 7.1, the Finder version 7.1 is not scriptable. To make it scriptable, update it to version 7.1.3 and install “Finder Scripting Extension”. (7.1.2 may be also OK.)
In System 7.5 and later, the Finder is scriptable. (Though “Finder Scripting Extension” is still necessary in some versions, it is to be installed automatically.)
Macintosh Drag and Drop
If your computer is running System 7 or 7.1, extensions which enable the Macintosh Drag and Drop are necessary to take advantage of drag-and-drop features.
Speech Manager
To make your computer speak, Speech Manager is necessary. The name of the installer programs may read “Text-To-Speech” or “Plain Talk”.
Appearance Manager
To see extended shortcut keys (that include Shift, Option or Control keys) on the menu, Appearance Manager is necessary. (But the shortcuts are always available because QuoEdit handles the typed keys in the same way whether Appearance Manager is available or not.)
If your computer is running system earlier than Mac OS 8, you can get Appearance Manager SDK from FTP site of Apple Computer (though the directory structure may be changed) for the installation.
<ftp://ftp.apple.com/developer/Development_Kits/Appearance_SDK_1.0.4.sit.hqx>
If your computer is running Mac OS 8 or later, Appearance Manager is always available and you cannot remove it.
Navigation Services
Provides new file dialog boxes in Mac OS 8.5 and later. In QuoEdit, you can choose whether or not to use the services with Miscellaneous command. If you feel the Navigation Services is too slow, possibly your system relys on the virtual memory largely. In that case, choose not to use the Navigation Services.
Adding the Navigation Services to the earlier systems is not recommended in QuoEdit and that is an exception of optionally required systems.
For systems earlier than Mac OS 8.5, Navigation Services 1.0 (that requires Mac OS 7.5.5 or newer, Appearance Manager 1.0.1 or newer and so forth) was once released by Apple Computer. But QuoEdit cannot support that version properly. Especially in 68K version of QuoEdit, Navigation Services is not supported anymore.
For Mac OS 8.1, Navigation Services 1.0.1 (that requires CarbonLib) is available and it seems to have fixed many bugs. But that version still cannot select AppleScript scripts from the Execute Script command in QuoEdit. (That is why not recommended.)
